UPnP/Virtual Server curse

On my old D-Link router whenever I enabled UPnP or set up a virtual server in order to get something like bittorrent working properly, the router would die about 10 minutes later and would continue doing so until I removed the VS and disabled UPnP.

I just thought it was because I just managed to pick out a bad router.

However, I now have a Belkin and it does exactly the same thing, so I'm guessing it's actually something i'm doing wrong...

I'm so confused, help me please!
 
...yes. That's what causes the problem.

I forward the ports, then the router continually resets itself every 10 minutes until I eventually get annoyed and remove the rule I just set up for it.
 
I have no idea for the belkin one.

The D-Link one always was, and the problem is identical on the D-Link and the Belkin :/
 
Both :p

One PC is connected with a wire, the other Wireless.

I'm on the wireless one, the wired one isn't turned on at the moment.
 
You could try downloading from a wired machine. That will be one step further to see if its your wireless. Have you updated EVERYTHING? All operating system hotfixes / drivers ?
 
Why would my operating system cause routers to reset themselves when I change just the UPnP/VS settings? :confused:

If it makes any difference, the old D-Link I had was also in a different house, with 8 machines, all connected via wireless and would be stable for weeks and weeks unless I tried to enable UPnP or set up a VS for port forwarding at which point it would then continually crash until I undid those changes.

The Belkin is now doing the same, I can't understand it :/

Because the programs used for UPNP are been translated via the operating system. How do you think traffic from the program reaches your machine? If settings are incorrect then it can cause too much traffic causing your router to reboot, overheat or reset or even break.

Can I ask what ISP you have? and what speeds you sync at? have you encrypted the traffic in the program?
 
ISP is Pipex, 1Mb (yay for parents who are too confused to upgrade, i hate living back at home) using uTorrent and traffic is encrypted.

I'm going out now, so won't be able to reply for a few hours.
 
When you get in, give your router a full reload. Add isp settings e.t.c to the router and add port forwarding. Make sure there are no internal firewalls activated and retry again.

It could be Pipex you no.
 
What is the model of D-Link router and what settings are you using for the VS. I assume yuou have set up your LAN connection so that the PC is gettig a static IP from the router and you have confirmed this IP is not being usied already by anyother machine on the network.

I possible post screen shot of the VS setting page and also post what IP you are forwarding to

edit - MSN has since stopped working and is informing me that my 'DNS is unable to resolve IP addresses'

...well that's helpful. Guess that's why only OcUK, Facebook and IRC are working too.

Well that's just what uTorrent has set as default...

I'm now however, thoroughly confused as to this DNS issue and why hardly anything works at all, despite rebooting both the PC and the router :S
 
I used to have a similar problem on various routers, from what i remember researching it comes down to the p2p program opening too many connections and not closing them, the router is trying to cache all these dns entries and eventually runs out of memory and crashes.
The fix is essentially 1 line in the firewall config to lower the time dns entries are cached for *however* most (if not all) routers wont allow access to the firewall config by default.
You should look around and see if you can install a custom firmware on the router, most custom firmware runs a basic linux install. From what ive seen the default config will work fine and you shouldnt have any problems.

Hopefully your router is supported otherwise try searching google to see if its possible to run custom firmware on your router.

**DISCLAIMER**
Trying to install/run custom firmware may end up bricking your router leaving you with dead kit. It may break everything, steal your wife and possibly kill some close family members without warning so make sure you read the install guide if you do try :)
