Having had my 5th power glitch in the last hour! :(

I wonder whether anybody has tried extending the standby time of an off-the-shelf UPS by splicing in larger batteries (Say a pair of 100AH Leisure batteries)

Would this even be possible, or would the UPS operating software/charge controller get freaked out?

Yes it is possible but consumer grade ups have small heatsink in there inverter and it will probably overheat if run more than what its internal battery is rated for.

One way around this is to provide airflow to the inverter to help remove heat fast but then again I don't recommend this unless you know what your doing.

The battery management will not be happy, it might not even charge. Smaller UPS systems only have 7-18AH of battery with a half day recharge time. On larger units you can get extended battery packs but again these typically use 9Ah batteries to keep the costs down and increase the voltage while keeping a small form factor. These usually have their own charging packs.

If your power is only glitching, a true online UPS or a cheap one with a voltage regulator should iron out most of the issues without having to switch to battery for long.
