Worth it?

Ive got a 720p LCD and have little intention of switching my collection to BR or HD at any point in the near future but will buy an upscaling DVD player if I will see a noticeable difference

Thanks, Mark

i find it depends on firstly how good the player is at upscaling. i have had good results from my pioneer 989, but have friends with cheaper players who arent so keen.

also seems to depend on the source material, some DVD's really benefit from it and others almost look worse.

I run my xbox360 as a dvd player to my NEC 20wgx2 monitor at 1360 * 720 via the ms vga cable and it looks so good with most decent dvd's I can't imagine blue ray of hd dvd look that much better.

I'm fact i've seen a few BR's being played and the difference is very minimal.

It also depends on the dvd being played, I watched one of the new Starwars via this method and it look totally rubbish as the quality is so bad the monitors shows up all the detail that a crt would hide.

Watched Black Hawk down and it looked awsome !

when i ran bluray's from my PS3 to my 42 inch panasonic plasma at 720p i didnt see what the big deal was. granted it was crisper, but not that much crisper.

then i watched bluray at 1080p on my 63 inch plasma. i will now always try and buy the bluray version of a film if its available!

upscaling dvd players and 720p screens......waste of time really imo.

even if you were to get an upscaler and scale to 720p, the screen would still be scaling that to the panels native resolution (1366x768), scaling the image twice which is bad in itself. but ultimately, your still limited by the performance of the tv's scaler.

the best thing to do on a 720p screen is use a media pc and output the screens native resolution, using something like ffdshow to do the scaling. failing that, an xbox360 w/VGA cable is a good alternative, if you can stand the noise lol

yep, thats because the tv is still scaling as well:) lots of people are disappointed with bluray on their 720p screens and wrongly blaming bluray itself. there's little wrong with bluray of course:)

oh they are, but you need a native 1080p screen to start seeing those differences:)

I too have found Blu Ray to look amazing in native 1080p running in 24@96Khz super smooth.
So much so im considering revamping the PC to also have HD-DVD or getting a standalone player to further enjoy my new 1080 projector at its best.
Mind you the new LG Blu Ray Recorder and HD-DVD PC drive is tempting...

Btw you CAN rent films or certain highstreet stores do part-exchanges...

I send BD to my 720p screen @ 1080p/24 and it looks awesome, mind panny commercial screens have very good scalers esp when downscaling - it looks much much better than DVD.

With Upscaling players you need to spend lots before they do a better job than most screens internal scalers, as mentioned PCs can do a very good job.

For a dvd upscaler you would be mad to not get a EP30/EP35 HD-DVD player these days, very good upscalers for dvd and obv can also playback HD-DVD !

As my old SD/Scart DVD player was worn out, I was looking for an upscaling DVD player. Saw that the EP30 could be got for under £190 and came with 7 free HD DVD's (2 in the box 5 by redemption), so got one :) Mind you it does mean I have had my son playing Transformers HD DVD far too often for the last month
