Starting to get quotes from independents for new windows. As there a particular manufacturer to look out for etc?

I'll watch this as on South coast too.
GS windows did my front door, that was fine. But never had a window from them, prices look reasonable.
Is it worth laying Everest money, are they really that good?

Had Everest quote a few years back for a door. Agreed a Saturday install and then they said they wouldn’t. Wouldn’t give me my deposit back. Right bunch of shysters.

I spoke with the area manager, he said it shouldn’t have been agreed. He got ****** with me when I said you can the install during the week, but I’ll charge you a day rate for not being at work.

last quote I had from another company, gave a clear instruction. Give me your price straight up, no this week only. He agreed. Then a price time. “We’ll good news for you today I’ve spoken to my manager.
He was shown the door in an instant, got funny about it. Give me a quote simple.

I can do you a really good deal. No you can’t as you can’t listen. So **** off

I’m after a decent Indy, but wanted to know who makes the windows etc.

I had Everest quote for a door, was £4500 but came down to around £2000, yikes!
Went on about how much better etc.... But didn't go with it.

The hardware (locks and hinges) is what normally fails, we use Nico at our place and tbh have never had any calls about them going. Theyre made in the UK, im sure theres probably other decent brands as well.

Guess you could ask what kind of locks and hinges they use and whether they get them from china or not... and obviously glass, that can also be another thing that fails if the sealed units are crap.

No, no idea why people pay their prices.

They're all argon filled at the start and will all invariably leak at some point. This leads to cloudy windows which look absolutely horrendous.
mine have their own weather system inside complete with crystals formed between the panes at the bottom :D

Hinges are always the first things to go on PVC windows it seems, probably an intended point of failure so they can refit hinges every few years, or get people who don't know better to buy whole new windows

it’s this type of selling that ****** me off. I asked one company if they enjoyed ripping off the venerable as we used to have an elderly relative who would have signed at £4500.

if you muck around with wild discounts after giving the hour long pitch etc. you’ll be asked to leave.

I’ve seen a few Indy ref Veka

Plenty of local installers, it's all the same extrusion and glass at the end of the day. National chains are expensive.

We get cold calls from Weathershield all the time. I accepted their visit once, and after doing some measurements, they wanted me to there and then sign a contract with them. They did the whole act of phoning their manager "can we give them a discount" spiel and big oscar contender acting.

They gave a 50% discount just because of our situation etc.... Then a whole raft of finance deals etc... But we wouldn't get any of them if we didn't do it right then. Clearly they weren't happy when I said we'd want to think about it and check our finances etc...

Then got even more shirty with me when I told them I'm no longer interested, "so you mean I wasted my time?", Er, no, you wasted mine!

Definitely try and find an independent or at least a group that is less predatory.

I'd go independent because big firms border on the illegal.

There's standards all windows need to meet. No one is manufacturing stuff that isn't thermally sound. Don't listen to the diamond rated ******** from safestyle etc.

I needed new windows for the previous house that I was selling. I was quite to the point, this is what I need, no bells or whistles, just enough to sell the house. Got many companies in and they did the usual "let me call my manager" or sign today for a limited discount shenanigans - that instantly puts me off the company - I rolled my eyes to one salesman ensuring that he could see it, he knew that I knew. Another one I packed up his things for him and told him to leave. I agree with @Freefaller, some of these companies are predatory and are purposefully trying to scam you if they see you as an easy mark.

In the end I went with tradeframe.com, no problem recommending them. If you do some measuring you can build your own quote that will give you an idea of how much it'll cost you and how much markup the other companies are creaming. A few tweaks were required with my quote but the final price was £20 over my initial quote and I glazed a 3 bed semi for just over two grand (not including the door).
