I recently made a backup of my USB stick by just copying all of its contents onto my PC. That memory stick got wiped and so I went to get all the files from my backup folder on my PC, but I've now noticed that a lot of files are strangely missing, and some oddly replaced.
Almost all the folders and sub folders are there as far as I can tell. Just the files at the end of a lot of them are all gone. It's not just a couple from each folder, some folders have every file, and then others have nothing inside when there should be loads of documents. (Mostly word documents.)
When I go into the Properties of the folders with the missing files, it says that they have a few files in them, but when I go into them there's nothing there. However, it is saying like "4 files" "2 files", when in fact there should be over 20 in most cases, yet none at all in there when I look inside.
I opened the folders in WinRAR, and using that I've found a lot of odd .tmp files in those folders where the files should be. Not enough .tmp files to correspond with the amount of missing files, but several of these .tmp files in each of the folders.
Any ideas? Lost some really important files.
I have recently done the Upgrade to Windows 10 on the PC, could that be messing with it somehow? Saying that, my OS is on a separate SSD to where the backup folder is, which is on a HDD, so would have thought that would have been untouched.
Any help much appreciated.
UPDATE: A quick google of the .tmp files is saying a lot of them are Word temporary files, and most of the missing files are in fact Word files, so a link there somewhere. Most of the .tmp files say "~WRL0192.tmp", "~WRL0003.tmp" etc. All the same format.
Also, these .tmp files all say that they're modified on the original date I made the documents that are missing, a lot of them being dates in 2013 and 2014.
This help at all?
UPDATE 2: It appears that if I go into a folder's Properties, click 'Hidden', Apply, then Unhide it again, some of these .tmp files show up in normal windows explorer, and I can open them in Word, with most being intact. But it only shows me some, not all of the .tmp files that I can see in WinRAR..
