they dont run at 1ghz, thats the HT bus;) opteron 150's are 2.4ghz @ stock speeds.

Ahh.. I see. What do they have over say the X2s or Conroes if anything apart from price?

Right all you sexist non believers!

Just because i'm using my boyfriends (well part time boyfriend actually his real love is Pro Evo 5!!!!!) username doesn't mean i'm not a girl and as any of you out there with girlfriends will know we pick up information off you blokes and digest it thoroughly just incase we get asked sometime in the future!!

But really could someone answer my question before I go and buy something completely unsuitable.

Thank you

Jane :)
I think it was the conflict between you saying you don't have a clue and then talking about the issue with the 7900 series and mentioning the G71 core. People who don't have a clue generally wouldn't know what a core is in this context, let alone which ones are associated with trouble.

Chalk me down as another vote for the X1900XT. You can't beat them for a similar price. I'd either look for one pre-fitted with a quiet cooler (that option keeps your guarantee) or change the cooler myself for a third-party quiet cooler (that option gets you the best cooling/noise performance but invalidates your guarantee).

Agree with the above posts, X1900 XT. Either save some money and get the 256 MB version or get the slightly quicker 512 MB one. As said above if you can afford the HIS ones they have a quieter cooler. The stock coolers, while not noisy, you will hear them and some people find that annoying.

They do use plenty of power and need a quality PSU btw. 450W or above should be fine as long as it's not a Q-Tec or generic/unbranded.

If you want something that uses less power, have a look at the 7950 GT, but it is slower overall than the X1900 XT 256 mb.

You don't say what his current video card is.

On the nVidia side you have the:
BFG GeForce 7950 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI
for just £184.99 which is close to the 1950 above in performance and you have some extra cash to spend on something else for him :)

Nobody else has mentioned this yet but his CPU is quite slow and even with a state of the art graphics card it will never perform well in games as it is. If you go for the 7950GT above then you could spend the extra cash on a:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego (Socket 939) - OEM (CP-150-AM)
at just £59.99 rounding the entire deal off to a nice £245 for a massive boost to his overall system performance.
Quoted for truth!
No sense in buying a powerful graphics card if it's only going to be choked by the CPU, and apart from that, the Nvidia cards use a lot less power than the ATIs so he might be able to get away with going SLI at a later date without having to replace the PSU.

Right guys, Richie here, not my chick.

Opteron 150 arrived this morning, bought from a well know auction site. I've tested it on a not so good ecs board (the one with agp & pci-e) I've got and it works fine. The only graphics card I've got at the mo is the excellent ATi 9250(AGP). :D

So, my system so far consists of:-

AMD Opteron 150

2x1 Gb OCZ 4000 Gold

Thermaletake Xaser 480 PSU

I was thinking the lp ultra d mobo and the his 1900xt-x 512.

Can anybody see a problem with this setup.

Is the psu sufficient, will the cpu bottle neck the graphics card.

Many thanks. :)

I'd suggest again the x1900xt, its a great card...and able to run at high resolutions with lots of sparkles well (dont want to cause any more bogglement).

However IF you wanted something almost as fast, and have £60 to take him out for a meal for his b'day I'd suggest the 256MB £170 X1900xt. The core itself is at fast, it just doesnt have as much memory, but the extra 256MB is only used by a few games. If hes not obssessive with computers it should still be a nice upgrade, and you could go out with the money left over :)

If the 480W PSU is a good one, and has a plug for a PCI-E gfx card, and generally isnt weak on the power it gives out, it should be fine :)

If you're worried, you could take the extra £60 I mentioned above away from a going out fund and put it into a new PSU, like a Hiper/Antec/Tagan 500~ Watt-ish one which should definately power the system fine, including some clocking, and still get him the 256MB version of the x1900xt.

An Opteron 150 runs at 2.4GHz stock.
An Athlon64 3700, the suggested replacement, runs at 2.2GHz stock.

Other than that, the two are almost identical.

It looks like a bad exchange to me.

Once again, "quoted for truth" is wrong.

Right, that card is fine for that cpu.

End of story... i realy wish people would put some sense into their posts..

He is going to get great FPS With that set up... not Two FPS

The PSU should be adequate if it isn't weak on the 12V line. It's a good make, so it probably won't be weak.

The CPU might be the bottleneck in some circumstances in games (i.e. rather than the graphics card being the bottleneck), but I don't think it will be an issue. It's not a weak CPU and I think it will be at least adequate for the time being even if you run it at stock. I'm using an A64 Venice clocked to 2.35GHz and that's proving good enough. You'd have 1MB L2 cache instead of the 512KB I have and a slightly higher clock speed.

I wouldn't bother with the XTX 512 version myself. I don't think it's worth the extra cost over the XT 256 version, but of course that's down to how much spare money you have.

Which one? I read that afew 79s burn out!! Is that applicable to the 7950s? Are they still using the G71 core?? ;)
The Ultra D does it have two full speed PCI - E Lanes?

Not only do I buy computer parts but like to think I know something about them too!!!!!!!!!

Jane :D

The only 79xx cards affected were some 7900GTs, the 7950 dont use g71 afaik

The ultra d has 1 full speed pcie channel and one x8. It cannot be used for sli unless you do the pencil mod.
