Urgent problem with gf's PC.

Sounds like Its a hardware fault with the graphics card, try removing it then reinserting it as it may be due to a bad connection in the slot, if that doesn't solve it then if its under warranty return it if not replace it, id recommend this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-135-XF&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=938 (EDIT: same card as above poster lol)

***EDIT***

Also if the card has two ports to connect the monitor to then try connecting it to the other one, this kind of error can be limited to just one port (I have an old 7800GTX that suffers from the same problem and also refuses to display red, but only on DVI-1 lol)

Some of the things you are saying is too complicated, can you tone it down so my puny brain can understand it clearly?

Also, would the new card just work with the PC? I won't have to upgrade any other parts?

1) When the PC is running, look to see if the graphics card fan is moving unimpeded. You can also feel the heatsink if you like to see if it's hot. It should be very warm to the touch, but not scorching hot.

2) Unplug all cables, then clean out the PC well. Use compressed air if you can. Remove the PCI cards, including the graphics card, by unscrewing the screw holding them in, then pulling them gently out of the sockets. I guess the graphics card heatsink will be very clogged with dust. Put the cards back in.

3) Make sure the PC is somewhere ventilated so it doesn't get clogged up again :)

4) If the 8500 has 2 possible connections to the monitor, try the 2nd one, as suggested above.

5) If you need to get a new graphics card, a 1 gig 4850 is in your price range and will be a significant step up. You'll be able to swap it for the 8500 directly.

Should also mention that with many motherboards, there is a little clip you'll need to push in or pull up on to allow the card to be removed.

Is there any other cheaper ones at all? The one she had is an 8500GT, we don't want to spend much so would any of the 5450's be a better option?

It's mainly the delivery charge which is a ><

Would I get free delivery on it as I have been here a while? Not sure if you still do it.

What other GPU''s would be a good buy or would the 4850 be the best one?

Also, what if it doesn't work and I have to send it back etc? Would I have to pay return costs etc?

I'm just covering all bases before I buy something as I lack knowledge with all this shizzle yo'

Nevermind, just purchased the one recommended above, I will probably be spamming this thread over the next coming days about what to do when it gets here XD

Don't go there! As above, link your forum account to your shop account (or create one if you haven't bought from here before) = free shipping.

By the pics supplied I'd say I'm 99% sure it is the graphics card on its swan song.

When you get the new card, ask again here. There are plenty of people who will help you uninstall the old drivers/install the new ones.

Then stand back and bask in the glory of your gfs fixed PC! :) You da man ;)

Right, I've just installed the new GPU, it boots up fine etc. But when we startup we get a prompt asking to Boot from CD? :S

What does this mean exactly? She doesn't have the Windows CD (XP) and we are hoping it doesn't know mean we gotta buy Windows.

It didn't come up with this on the old GPU.

Ah its a change in the BIOS settings. Go into the BIOS, select boot, then select boot device priority. Choose to boot from the hard drive. That should boot the OS on the hard drive.

I imagine there is an OS on the hard drive...

hmmm should boot fine with just a change of GPU. Is the hard drive detected at boot?

What he said. The bios detected a change or something, and made the HD magically dissapear.

That thing must be an antique. The hard drive should appear in the bios, and it should be your primary boot drive.

I have set it to boot from hard drive, yet it still asks to boot from system disk.

I have set it to hard drive and disabled the other options :/ Had no problem with this before the change of GPU.

Mmmmm, not to sure, I'm in Barnsley it's like the stone age here sometimes :/

And Windows XP is like £70 new? :/ Is that right at all?

I'm assuming when you say Boots up you actually mean Posts; and when you say startup you means boot? As others have mentioned, double check your boot settings in the bios.

Have you connected the additionally power connectors to your new graphics card?

Also can you post you hardware specs please.

EDIT: Wander if you're PSU is up to the job and is being overloaded....
