I've got it built now and thought I'd let you see how it went...while sneaking in a quick question about something I'm not sure about.

The question is, have I got the outside fan on the cooler on the wrong side? I'm getting around 26-27 idle, 50ish under load like this but it looks weird to me. If I moved it to the other side, it would still look weird unless there was a fan on both sides.

Scruffy but functional wiring. I got bored taking the twists out. My son loves it and he can't believe the speed difference over his old Q6600, DDR2 ram and 6670 GPU.

There's plenty of clearance with the Sammy ram. Tiny stuff. I'll swap it over tomorrow then.

Also the ram should go in the 2 white slots so you get dual channel mode.

Graphic card should go into the top PCI-E x16 slot rather than the bottom one to get the full bandwidth...

I tried putting it in the top slot but it was fouling on the sata cables. I'll try it again by moving some wiring about.

Moving it up may improve the performance so it's worth doing. You may just have to re-route the cables..

Make sure you sort the RAM out too.

Yeah you definitely need to move that GPU to the other slot, even if it means putting the right angled ends of the SATA cables on the motherboard side to see if that stops the GPU from fouling on the connectors. The top PCI-E slot has 4x the bandwidth of the bottom one.

And as mentioned previously, make sure to stick the RAM sticks into two slots of the same colour to enable dual channel mode

Told you I was out of touch with new parts. Everything in my day had 1 PCIe or AGP slot, 2 DIMM slots and single fan coolers.

Ram, GPU and fans are now operating where they should have been so thanks for all the help. I got there in the end.

Unfortunately, I've got the desktop bug again now after moving to a 3D laptop a few months ago. I'm itching to build one for myself again now.

I have 5 PC's (two good, one half decent, two terrible), 2 Mac's (one decent but broken, one terrible) and a laptop at the moment. (things got out of hand - i forget to sell things -, soon six machines will be gone

)

Having a desktop rig and a 3D laptop sounds like a very nice, manageable and comparitively far more sensible combo :rolleyes:
