The US Open started today and the big two stories are the lack of Djokovic, due to his vaccine status, and the impending retirement of Serena. Djokovic knew he couldn't travel to the US without having taken the vaccine so I have absolutely no sympathy for him although it does make the men's draw far more interesting.

Medvedev and Swiatek are the top seeds and favourites with Norrie and Raducanu the highest seeded Brits. Raducanu will be looking to continue the improvement she showed at the Cincinnati Masters recently although another early exit wouldn't be a shock given her form this season. She'll lose a ton of ranking points if she doesn't defend her title but a year out of the spotlight to develop her game wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to her imo.

Every game is on Amazon Prime

Personally think it’s probably for the best for Raducanu bombing out here. The hype train has fully derailed now and she can reset and rebuild from a level she’s probably more suited to currently without everyone expecting another miracle.

Been obvious for awhile really - she needs a different coach/regime and more experience.

She’s had about a million coaches already!

That US open win was lightning in a bottle and I don’t think she is anywhere near that level in general. She’s young, her dad sounds like a nightmare and she’s earned more money from that single event than she will in the rest of her career combined I imagine.

So many young sports stars in high value sports suffer when massive money comes their way. Suddenly the effort and sacrifice required to kick on is fighting with the desire to enjoy wealth and fame.

I'm not sure that is fair, she seems to put the effort in actually but when it comes down to it outside of a freak win she just isn't actually that good.

I mean, who knows. It seems odd that you can go from winning the US open to being largely useless in such short order. I don't believe that she is a next tennis superstar but I fully believe that her focus has dropped. Shes made something silly like £20m since winning the US open. The majority of that from sponsorship and selling herself.

It seems like more and more young athletes are finding that they don't have the mental toughness to deal with the stresses of professional sport and the pressure/attention it brings.

I don't really pay that much attention but whenever I have seen anything it seems like a wrong fit for her.

Her dad seems like a bit of an arrogant ***** who thinks he knows best about everything. I think he basically said something along the lines of "you learn what you can from a coach and then move on to someone with new ideas". Like you can absorb all a coaches wisdom and get value from them in a month or two.

Not an unexpected loss given her form but Cornet was an incredibly tough first round opponent who's had an amazing year.

It looks she'll drop down to around 80 in the world which looks like a disaster on paper but it's still 80 in the world and higher than she was ranked before the US Open last year. More importantly, once the media frenzy dies down and the spotlight moves on to some one else she can concentrate on her tennis again.

She's had an awful season but that's happened to a lot of great players after winning a slam at a young age so despite many writing her off, I saw enough at Wimbledon alone last year to tell me she's got the talent to be a serious player if and when she finds her game.

Raducanu FLOP. She's become financially successful now. The drive won't be there anymore. Always the same with these young stars.

both her parents are financial executives so she has been very well off from birth.

Its just an insanely hard game and she is 19, it was a crazy that she won any major at all.

We say it’s crazy she won a major but I dunno with the women’s game. Apart from your occasional once in a generation talent (Serena, Graf, Seles etc) a lot of the women’s players are so erratic you can’t predict from one tournament to the next who is going to win.

Often think if you ran a grand slam tournament 10 times in a row you’d get 10 different winners. The Wimbledon winner went out in round 1 here for example!

It will be interesting to see what happens when the current golden generation of mens tennis retire. They have been utterly dominant and should have been at least partially replaced years ago by upcoming talent.

I genuinely believe that we are now in an age where the biggest factor in long term success will be almost entirely mental strength and resilience. Something which we are increasingly stigmatising and trying to eliminate from todays youth. I am fully behind people taking their mental health seriously but it feels like we are going too far in the other direction and removing as many character building experiences as we can for fear of damaging people.

Disagree to a point. All three, four if you include Murray, have played during an era where sports science has allowed them to compete for far longer than they might've previously.

Men seem to peak around their mid twenties, women earlier, but sports science may have increased that quite substantially so the current crop might still have their best years ahead of them.

Imaging a footballer winning player of the season at 18, not displaying the same form the next season and everyone writing him or her off. She’s in her second year of what could be a 15 year career :o

Anyway, Murray’s currently in a battle with Nava, 3-2 on serve in the first. Love the fact he’s back with Lendl and attacking every shot again.

90 minutes for the first set, 3 hours for the match but Murray prevails :o

Nava's level in the first set was ridiculously high, and he completely outplayed Murray, but he couldn't sustain it and ended up getting battered.
