USA Sim Card...

Whereabouts are you staying, and what sort of places are you going?

Is wifi an option? It's pretty prolific over there, so something like Boingo might be better?

doing a round trip in the south, in a Ford Mustang. so going to be in the car a lot, so after some sort of 3g connection, for email/gtalk with the wife. Also would like the sat nav features and my Nexus Galaxy is really good on the satnav maps front it would do the job if i had the right plan.

hey, another thing u can do while your over there (theere are no doubt other ways to this this :), but this is ONE way). once u get to the states you can pop into Verizon or another phone shop and purchase a payg phone for pretty cheap you can get a phone on payg topped up with like $10 credit for about $25 so not bad really then phone from there. however for your needs in needing gmail and web etc this may cost you more for net usuage out there, but look into this idea.

however if you have a UK payg phone which can access wifi etc once u get out there you could techically use wife out there (if you can find it) and get into free wifi hot spots. can be very expensive using your UK phone abroad with roaming costs etc even with the deals providers have now, so make sure u have that off unless you have other ideas! :)

yeah the link above lets me get a card now with some sort of plan, failing that i was just gonna go in a shop and purchase a sim card or cheap phone. i do need 3g data, as i need constant access to my email while in the car. i wont be using much data but need it really.

i use gmail for business and keeping the already unhappy wife who gets to stay back in England.

Awesome, just the slightest bit jealous! :p

See your point, that said if you're that rural are you even going to get 3G coverage?

I'd suck it and see tbh, take Vodafone PP with you and if you find the coverage is good or you're seeing a good smatterings of wifi hotspots then shoot for those and see if you can get a plan.

Might be worth dinging [TW]Fox, he's done a couple of road trips over in the US so might have a solution.

ah see what you mean, I havent gone through all the deals in the lnik but AT&T do offer a plan which is $50 that offers unlimited data, talk and text. so if you could contact them may be worth it in the end for what you will use it for. However, in terms of reception etc out there I know it kinda varies from state to state as to whether verizon, at&t or t-mobile are better.

cool yeah just finding out what is what really, i don't mind going in and out of signal, but be handy by and large to be able to check the mail/web

I would also be interested in this. Data only for iPad say 2GB data.
Lot of it is unplanned and usually booking on line you can get the places cheaper than at reception, or that's what I found in Australia.
So having internets very useful, although there are coffee shops which I did a few times for the wifi.

Are mobile prices in America really that much? Most seem to be packages if you want data at like $50-60 a month.

yeah seem high, but i guess you get a lot for your money, not that me or you would be using that amount or the free calls, i just need data really

Get a AT&T SIMO 1 month unlimited deal or PAYG and just top up. Ignore the verizon talk, you're not buying another phone and their network isn't compatible. T-Mo USA is OK but it's coverage is weaker in general.

Any data use at all is going to cost far too much for the second SIM not to be worth it, you're on holiday so you might as well just spend the extra quid to make sure you can use your device correctly as all the tools it needs to be.

For what it's worth it's highly priced over there because they pay to receive and send calls so they need higher allowances thus the package types they offer etc... Amazing that they let that fly tbh but hey, their choice.

There are tons of SIM sellers on ebay if you want to be 100% prepared for what it's worth but otherwise they have shops like we do in most malls and stands in streets etc...
