Hey team,

I recently bought a WD MyBook USB (Mac edition with PRETTY lights) 2.0 1TB external drive to use as a backup for about 500Gb of data on my machine.

I already have 2 Samsung F3's inside the machine which this data is replicated across so I do have backups but I wanted an external solution as I am trying to clean items out of the machine that I dont need with an aim to getting a smaller case eventually (3 Hdd's, unnecessary USB 2.0 cards etc)

These Samsung drives are both nearly maxed out and that was why I was aiming at 1Gb.

Now, my first go at backing up (after formatting to NTFS) was abysmal.......after 13 hours, the drive still had not copied everything and was actually throwing overheating warnings.......

I tried again the following day and after the same period of time, the room smelt like a convector heater.

Slightly concerned about the safety of this drive, I duly wiped it (which took 18 hours and continuous fire precautions) and returned it.

Now.....Im not sure if it was a problem with the drive or the labouring that it was doing to copy 500Bg over USB 2.0.

So, I have decided to stick in a wee USB 3.0 card (from OcUK) into my machine to try and help whatever new drive I choose to buy.

So, here is my quandry.

2.5" or 3.5" USB 3.0 ?

Has anyone got first hand experience of any performance difference between the two?

While not essential, it would be kind of useful to be able to swing the drive onto my laptop or bring it with me and that steers me towards a 2.5" solution.

But, after trawling the intertubes for quite a while, it would appear that Buffalo USB 3.0 3.5" Drivestation drives (which I am currently considering) are rocket ships in the performance stakes.

I dont want to offset the performance increase I have achieved from USB 3.0 by getting a potentially slower 2.5" drive even though it would have its benefits for me.

I'd love to hear your thoughts and personal recommendations guys.

FYI, my budget is no more than £100 and I dont believe I need any more than 1Tb.

Cheers
Andy

there was obviously somethin seriously wrong with the first usb drive you got, i've got a few usb2 external drives and they all copy at about 90Gb to 95Gb an hour and i've never had one overheating.

Since you'll be using the drive with a laptop i'd reccomend you get a 2.5" drive, they're a lot handier for carying about.
