Evening all.

Looking to get a new case,
Fractal Design Define XL USB3.0 Full Tower Case.

Question is, My motherboard is 5+ years old, served me well. Asus striker extreme 680i.

Will i be able to connect the front USB ports on this case to my motherboard? or do i need some sort of adaptor for 3.0 as oppesed to 2.0?

Cheers.

USB 3 has a completely different connector to a USB 2 and some cases have the USB 2 lead coming off the USB 3 connector, so you can use the ports at USB 2 speeds.

Have a look at my build log below and you see the USB 3 connector with the USB 2 lead.

As your looking to upgrade on the future you could always do a spec check in GH :D

Some man! So if i do have they 2.0 connectors comming off my 3.0 leads, is there a lead i could buy to convert it to run at 2.0 speed yeah? :D Much appreciated!

Haha how ironic would that be :p Might just do one for the lol'z

Doing things section by section due to the cost.

Case first, keeping my psu (thermaltake toughpower 750w)

Then motherboard, ram and cpu.

Keeing HDD's also.

Looking at these new generation of motherboards though, do they not have pata ports anymore for my old dvd burner? or will i have to but a sata burner?

God, i go away for a year and feel lost now

A year, a lot can happen in the computer world :D

I am not sure if there is a lead on market which can convert the lead to USB 2 without the case manufacturer doing it, but you could always buy a USB 3 card, mind you, as your upgrading I'm sure one can live without a USB port for a month or so :)

Talking of time, I need to go ;)

Hope all goes well with your build I will keep a eye out :)

If I were you I would replace the DVD burner when you come to replacing the motherboard, you can get adaptors but they need extra wires and dont always work well and look a bit messy, besides you can get a DVD burner for about £12
