I am a very happy chap. The P6X58D is in stock tomorrow so I can go ahead with my plan to build the system on Saturday. What a difference a day makes!
On another note, in all honesty I think ASUS "ought to have" prepared some mATX boards with USB 3 and SATA 6Gbps onboard by now. mATX is the form factor for which it makes the most sense, since you only have 4 expansion slots and are less likely to be able to spare one for an add-in card to do the job.
