USB Broadband Connection Problem

If you can access http://216.239.59.104 like i said, then there is problems with DNS. Since you can't access the webpage like that theres more serious problems than I thought.

By the time you had solved this you could have formatted and more than likely it would be working again depends what settings you changed or what your friend changed.

You said you could ping sites though right?........ Then it must be a setting in IE for sure.

Try start > run > cmd > nslookup google.co.uk as above said.

post the results.

He's formatted the PC using the supplied "restore" disk. I've never trusted them to be honest. I'm gonna give it a proper windows reinstallation and also try another browser.
Hopefully I'll be able to try and connect to my internet connection via USB to try it.

OK, got the computer here with me now. Connected it to my broadband connection via the USB modem and I get the same thing - says its connected but wont load any page. Tried it with firefox too and that cant load the page either.

NS Lookup results:
Cant find server name for address 212.74.112.66 No Response from server
Cant find server name for address 212.74.112.67 No Response from server
Default servers are not available
Unknown, cant find google.co.uk: No response from server

The PC has been formatted with the reboot disk but its one of those where it doesnt actually format anything.
It just resets back to factory settings with all files/drivers still in tact.
Maybe should try a clean install/proper format, if it is a virus thats caused it?

Do a new clean install and then your best off going around and installing the software yourself for the modem and you can see whats going on.

You could check the settings in Internet Explorer (Tools > Internet Options > Connections)

Yah all that seems good - and was confirmed as correct via Tiscli techy help guys.
I have the modem and the software here with me, and it seems I can check if it works via my BT broadband and the modem - as I have the same problem with it; connects but doesnt display the page.

Do a clean Install and try again.

Solved.

I did a full format and reboot of windows (as opposed to using the in-cd restore utility which is rubbish) and all seems to be well.
Three hours updating to SP2 and everything thats needed before and after that. lol

As expected, formats usually solve most things.
