hi i usually try and sort out my problems but cant resolve this one!
recently bought a cheap generic 3.5" bay card reader installed in my case and hooked up to the internal usb headers.
old system so the usb is 1.1 as far as im aware, early revivion epox 8k3a+ mobo revision 1 the one before the 5.1 sound was implemented on the board.
anyway!
the actual card reader works fine in that it can read all my sd cards etc however the usb connector in it refuses to work the devices plugged in are not detected and a usb blutooth dongle when plugged in seems to shutdown / short the reader.
the power light fades away to nothing and the icons for the removable drives dissapear from my computer
i have tested the usb devices via the other usb ports on the mobo and they work fine so i assumed the reader was duff. however further testing in another older pc the reader and usb socket performed fine.
the only thing i can think of it that the connector on the reader to plug into the mobo has one pin missing.
the older pc i plugged the reader into and worked fine also had that pin missing my own pc mobo has the pin.
plot thinckens... using a usb header (the two usb socket that screws into a backing plate) had all the pins i tried it on the older pc and the think wouldnt boot.
what revelance does the extra pin have? are there different usb wiring conventions? is an annoying problem any help appreiated!
ooh i did try rotating the usb connector to no joy!
