So a friend of mine has a USB with some old files on, some of which seem to have been partly corrupted. There's many photos, some of which don't open, and some open but only display half the image with the rest being graphical errors, the rest open fine.

What's the chances of being able to recover the damaged files? They're willing to pay for a recovery service, but I thought I'd ask if there are any that people recommend, or if it's even worth attempting?

Thanks all!

Theres a chance theres always a chance.

Run an unstoppable copier on the usb for a start to create a perfect clone and then run the clone through some image recovery programs. This way you wont risk the originals.

Edit: I just remembered I've still got a license key for the best rated one out there. If you want to send me the corrupted files I can run it through for free.

It may not work but at least might save you the hassle of paying big bucks for a firm to do it.

She was able to make a copy of the drive already, as it seems the files were all able to be read, they just still don't open. I'll take a look at unstoppable copiers though and see if they get any more data off.

Are there any recovery programs you'd recommend?

Edit - Thanks for the offer, but there's a lot of personal files on the drive that I'm not sure they'd be happy sharing. Thanks though!

No worries at all :).

The one I've had some success with was stellar phoenix recovery (~£40 iirc or free depending on morals :D). Its far from a guarantee but it managed to fix about 180/300ish corrupted images. It did fix another 60 well enough to be Photoshopped back to the originals, and the rest was lost to history.

I'm sorry I misread the OP I thought it was only photos :(.

Listen to the other guys and yeah just realised it wasn't a helpful offer from me sorry :D.
