Usb device not recognized

Hi there on my laptop i keep getting this error message when i insert anything into the usb ports. No matter what ive tried i still get the same error message.
Any idea's what i can do to try and fix it?

Sounds like a worn usb port. Tried another port?

The laptop has 3 ports, the 2 on one side both say the same when anything is inserted. The other one works fine.

sounds like the usb ports on the one side are knackered...

Tried external hard drive, usb flash drive also my Iphone. Ive not tried a mouse as of yet but im pretty sure nothing will work.

deffo sounds knackered then...
I reckon the ports have broken, or the cable to the ports is duff

Well i've just tried a mouse in one of the ports and it works but nothing happens in the other port! Looking like the usb card may be buggered.

Right guys, i got another usb board and fitted this. Plugged something in and its coming up with the same error! Surely it cant be a worn usb port afterall. Anyone know what it could be?

remove usb drivers from device manager...and that means ALL of them? including the chipset drivers...then reboot and it should reinstall fresh copies

My initial thoughts. I'd also check Windows Update/Manufactures website for an updated version

Trouble is, as quick as i uninstall the drivers. before i get time to do anything they are getting re installed..

Boot into safe mode and try it.

Have you checked the manufacture website or Windows update for an updated version?

Yeah according to windows all the latest drivers are installed. There doesn't seem to be any drivers for the usb or the motherboard on the Toshiba support/drivers page.

There will be some numbers written on the USB chip, I'd be googling that to see the make/model and going from there.

Which Toshiba laptop is it?

it should be ok if the drivers are getting reinstalled....could be something more serious then...maybe even a windows reinstall?

It's a good little tool for seeing what drivers are on, and for doing mass removal, etc.

I used it for when Windows refused to see my HTC and kept installing some Qualcomm driver. Selected all HTC / Qualcomm entries in there and did a remove. Then plugged the phone back in and it detected it correctly. Maybe able to help you out.

Worth a shot.

boot a linux cd, like ubuntu or slax

then test them in that, just to make sure it's not a Windows error
