USB Devices - Can you run programs on them?

I was just wondering if you can run programs on usb pen drives as they are starting to get a bit bigger now?

I have a work computer and was wondering if I could run things off it by installing the programs on the USB drive.

Is that possible?

These are basically portable apps.

I used them for college all the time e.g. Portable Firefox and the likes.

Couldnt you just run a normal program on a usb or would it create registry settings on the computer that it was attaching itself to?
