USB Drive only appearing in Device manager

I have a SATA drive in an Icy Box USB / SATA enclosure.

I have so many problems using the USB interface, it will detect it, install it, say its ready to use, but wont show up in My Computer or Disk Management :confused:

Infact the only way I can tell it is there is by looking in device manager, where it is shown as USB Device under Disk drives

Any ideas? At the mo I am on my parents PC, but has problems on my home pc / my girlfriends machine too. I generally use SATA on my PC so it has no problems there

Is it already formatted? If not then that could be the problem although from what you've said it sounds like you have already used it on your own PC? Do you have the latest SATA drivers installed?

yeah its formatted and working, infact transferred some stuff to it this morning, but that was using the SATA interface instead of the USB

dont need sata drivers on this machine as a) it doesnt have any SATA drives, and b) its plugged in via USB

also might add last time I was at my parents it worked fine, now its not.

Sorry long night last night, I meant to say have you got the latest USB drivers installed?

It might be worth deleting the controller/drive from Device Manager so it can reinstall.

XP SP2 so presume it has them already, as I said it has worked on this PC before

just tried it on my sisters laptop and it does exactly the same thing

I would do what semi pro waster said and uninstall it from device manager, then scan for changes and let it auto reinstall itself. Its worth a shot anyway and only takes a second.

aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh man!!

turns out the icy box has 2 sata ports on the PCB inside the enclosure.

it seems one is for sata > sata, the other is for sata > usb

just means everytime i want to use the other interface, i have to open her up an swap the internal cable over

Ah that explains why when I tried the SATA connector on my bros on my PC it didn't detect! The so called "Manual" that comes with the icy box is useless!
