bought a enclosure for a 40GB laptop drive i had picked up and was intending to use it as portable storage.

however i noticed that the drive sometimes paused and failed to copy files off the laptop drive to the internal drives. so i checked event viewer a hell of a lot of error 51s, paging errors, checked this out its not an error in the page file but simply from the drive to memory.

thing is this only happens while copying FROM the usb drive, copying to it is flawless.

i tried another drive from a laptop same issues, tried usb1.1 and 2 again the same thing.
also tried formatting fat 32, ntfs all with different allocation units sizes.

any ideas ?? any help much appreciated

First thing that springs to mind is power although it's a bit of a long shot especially if writes are OK but reads aren't. I've got a splitter cable which as a single compact USB plug at the HDD end but two 'A' plugs at the PC end which allows for more power to be sent to the drive than a single port can supply. However if it was power related I would expect the drive to fail to spin up at all rather than fail as described.
