I have an external USB hard drive that today has started giving me problems trying to access files and folders on it,
I have looked on the maxtor web site for any software to test the drive as they supply for internal drives but there is nothing for external,

is there any sort of software for testing USB drives ?

Thanks
Keith

lol Maxtor.
Have you tried the Maxtor in your desktop, on the internal IDE controller.

It could be a faulty hard drive. And being a Maxtor.. :)

I dont follow your post ?

The problems are with an external USB drive, its a maxtor one touch so if you mean stick this drive in the PC i am not taking it apart unless maxtor tell me to which i dont see them doing.

And as for lol maxtor, i have got atleast 5 other maxtor drives sat around here some of which are many years old and no problems, also fitted a dozen to other peoples PC's all with no problems, yes i have had 2 duds in recent months but i would say 2 from about 20 isnt the end of the world.

It is out of warrenty so maybe i can open it up,
it also has fire wire so i might give it a run on that tomorrow and see how it gets on rather than the USB,
failing that guess its time to find the screw driver.

Well i just found out HD Tune will work on the USB drive, completed a benchmark ok with expected results, when i have had a dud drive in the past it would not benchmark completly,
going to let it run a health check over night and see what it says tomorrow.
