I have a budget of about £65 for either a usb headset or an analog headset plus a sound card. I was looking at the corsair hs1 and the analog variant the hs1a. Would I be better to get the hs1a rather than the hs1?

I'm leaning more towards the hs1 as it has dolby headphone and leaves me with a spare pci slot for a freesat card.

Analogue verison and a DG would be my choice. Would be cheaper too than the USB version. You would have Dolby Headphone, a headphone amp, better sound quality from the DG, in comparison to the little USB one that comes with the HS1. Unless one doesn't have space for a sound card, the HS1A + Xonar DG choice, is a no brainer IMO.

It doesn't have dolby headphone though, is this a big miss? I can get the hs1 for £64 and I can get the hs1a plus a xonar dg for £70.

Will the audio quality be vastly superior in the hs1a and is there anything that would substitute for dolby headphone with the xonar dg?

"Dolby Headphone for an immersive 5.1 surround imaging"

Some people love it, some people hate it. Myself, I love it :)

I'd go for the HS1A + DG combo as well.

Are there any headsets around the same price as the hs1a that has dolby headphone? The lack of dolby headphone is the thing that is drawing me to the hs1.

Then why do all reviews say that the only negative is that there is no dolby headphone?

Because they're talking about the headphones themselves. If you were to use the headphones without the Xonar DG or another sound card which features DH, then no you wouldn't have DH.

Thanks for clearing that up, I skipped straight to conclusions and saw no dolby headphone. Works out to be the same price as well.

I'm looking into getting a headset the hs1a seems to be the way to go for me. It's not a huge expense to get a DG as well but is it noticably better than using onboard?

In most cases, people find a sound card, even a £20 one, to be superior. Not everyone finds that though. There has been the odd person who has found even a £90 D2X, no better than on-board audio. That did surprise me somewhat TBH. Corsair HS1A looks like a decent enough headset, so I'd be surprised if a Xonar DG didn't bring any benefit to them, in sound quality terms.

I've got the HS1As with a Xonar DG and am really happy with it.

Dolby headphone makes a lot of difference in gaming and it's definitely an improvement over on-board. BC2 sounds amazing compared to before and the localisation seems very good too.

It's worth the 20 odd quid to get the DG in my opinion.

I find the ASUS DG far superior to my onboard, which incidentally is a top line ASUS board (Crosshair IV). :)

I found the difference between onboard sound and my dedicated card, (asus xonar dx) to be like night and day.
