USB Key (Data deleted itself!!!)

No - Sorry

I am sure, data can not delete itself.

My USB flash drive just got fried, best thing to do is back it up on your PC every couple of weeks, to avoid situations like this.

thank god!!

I just tried it on a different machine and it worked, so i backed it up, tried it on my machine and it worked fine then!

Dunno what happened!? i just put it in and it was saying 512mb free, with no data on there at all :S

Yeah, you must safely remove them (not every time) but it is advised to do so!

This is because the PC is not expecting it to be removed, so your surprising the PC and flash drive with its removal, therefore could potentially damage the data on the flash drive.

They normally say they arn't reccomended for backups, though mine has been 100% ok. Was it on a mac? The ones at college sometimes thought the drive was empty when it wasn't, although mabye it happens on PCs too if not.

my old cruitial gizmo 128meg one has been though the was and dryer 3 times now, same data is still there and working fine!
I don't use it much anymore tho, going to get one of those 6 gig pocket hard drives or maybe a 2.5'' drive in a caddy.

As long as there's no programs, files or windows open on the drive itself, it's usually safe to just unplug it.

My USB key has a led which indicate if the key is currently in use by the system or not, I only unplug if within 1 sec there's no led lighting.
