USB Keyboard + mices problems

long story short
i have a problem with a laptop it wont recognises an USB keyboards and mice.
most other devices seem to work with a bit of encouragement but mice and keyboard appear in the device manager as USB devices in the other device section (where the unknown devices go)

ive done everything I can think of any ideas (how ever small or insignificant it is) are welcome

remember if its stupid but works its not stupid

uninstall usb in device manager reboot windows and let it reinstall.

worth a shot

usb ports giving enough power for the devices your using ?

yeah i tried that

yeah powers fine it can power things like ipods (yeah i plugged mine in to check ) and the mice / keyboards have power because lights come on

have you tried a wireless keyboad / mouse, that have an actual driver?

no we've only got a selection of a few standard dell ones and a few others that were dirt cheap.

if windows is reporting unkown device for your usb. simply put you need to try one that has a driver
