My thinking is to try the following, but would it work?

Copy media onto a memory stick and plug it into an LCD using a USB > HDMI cable/connector.
Even if I could play the media would I be able to hear the audio?

no

you need a way of sending an audio / video signal. USB memory sticks dont do this.

You could buy a HD tv that has a USB slot for playing media though. Sony / samusng and a few others have this functionality.

My TV has a USB port but only plays MP3 or JPEG files.
My Samsung DVD/Home Cinema also have a USB port and can play media files up to 1gb in various formats (DIVX etc) so it might work throught your DVD player if it has a port.

Out of intrest which TV is it you have that will only play the JPEGS and MP3s? As if it's an LG there is a very easy way to enable divx support.

Samsung LE37. But it doesn't matter as I don't use the TV slot anyway as the Home Cinema one does Divx :-)
