USB Mouse issue

In the past couple of weeks I've noticed something odd happening with my mouse. It seems to happen when I'm playing COD4 but also when in windows although not a severe. Whilst playing COD4 at times the mouse cuts off completely (light on side of mouse goes out) and after around 5 seconds comes back on again.

At first i thought it may be an issue with the USB ports on my mobo but none of my other cables / peripherals have shown any sign of cutting out (keyboard, external HD, camera cable, ipod) and i have tried the mouse in a couple of ports but still it happens.

The mouse is the Logitech G5 and I bought it two years ago next month. Anybody got any ideas of what might be causing this?

Cable sounds worn, usually where it goes into the mouse body...
This is where the cable gets flexed around the most.

I'll test the mouse elsewhere to see if it is the mouse. Is like to think its not where the cable meets the mouse as there is a fair amount of slack from desk to port and it hasn't been too much strain on it. Needs more testing before contacting logitech.

Sorry man I wasnt poking holes in your plan, but I had logitech optical mouse on my mums PC when I lived back home, although it was like 5 years old or something. And Ive had other (admittedly cheapo £5 jobbies) that have died in similar circumstances.
Worked it out by trying another mouse in the same USB port.

been testing out another mouse in my pc today and things seem to be ok usb port wise so I'll take my Logitech to work tomorrow just to make sure that it is something with that mouse. Will take a look at Logitech to see how their warranty etc works :)

Think I'll have to do a strip down of the pc, complete clean and see if that does anything. Its really odd the problems of the mouse just losing power completely then when it does go back on the set mouse speed has reduced down to a lower setting. It does seem to be quite sporadic when it happens. it can be several times in quick succession then wont happen for a few hours. Its really annoying though. Will see what happens with this though and if i have to will contact Logitech.

Still sounds like a dodgy connection! Maybe a break in the cable. This can be cauased by manufacturing defects, as well as use/misuse

It's usually the mouse. It is indeed at the point the poster earlier mentioned but the actual break point is inside the mouse shell. The reason for this is a lot of mice have a sharp 'S' bend in the wire before it exits the mouse. The copper strands in this area become weak and crack inside the rubber tubing. The failure is not openly visible.

If this is the problem with your mouse, simply wiggling the wire where it enters the mouse should make it flash on and off.

I did try this and yes it did flash on and off. I seem to have wiggled it so that the problem isn't happening as frequently though. I think its more of a quick fix though instead of a long term solution.

The only real solution would be to strip down the mouse, remove wires, chop past the infected bit, and resolder in place. Ive done it dozens of times in the past. Used to do it with XBOX pads etc. also.

Dont think I'd have the confidence of cracking the mouse open to fix it, I'd probably just crack it!

Or since it's Logitech, contact them and probably get a free mouse.

Hmmm, might be worth a try. We'll see what happens :)
