Usb port protectors?

Does anyone know if you can get small male to female usb adaptors, to protect the original port from frequent re-connects? I see extension cables which i'd prefer to avoid due to the size but nothing else.

I have a male to female USB extension cable. They work fine for connecting peripherals, but they seem to be tatty when using USB sticks. The transfer rate seems to drop.

I'd recommend a decent USB hub instead.

All of the ports on my old laptop became iffy, I have to jiggle my mouse to re-connect it often. There was also the time that the laptop fell off my bed onto the side with a connected device, resulting in one of the two ports becoming bent and un-usable, although to be honest I suspect the "port protectors" I am after would have failed to save them from that.
