Boys (+ ladies) bit of a problem... my usb ports are working but when i try and transfer data from my PC to external it just freezes on calculating and wont allow me to transfer... ive tried reinstalling new mobo drivers, system restoring, updating drivers for ports any other ideas?

thanks smallzz

P.S. not the ports themselves must be a software issue

What makes you think they're working?

Could be the external hard drive which is knackered. Could also be windows at fault, though you shouldn't have tried to replace the usb drivers if you're on XP or newer.

The external hard drive functions on other PC's/Laptops perfectly as i've tested this and also the ports allow my mouse and keyboard to work correctly in them and i've tried others, that's where i've got the idea that its the software.

you could try to reinstall the usb drivers... I have had some issues with my usb3 drivers which I resolved by updating from the mobo manufacturer site....

Is your external hdd a 2.5" one powered via usb? It could be that the usb port can't supply enough power. Try a powered hub?

tried installing all the usb drivers again from mobo manufacturer webby.

Also the external comes with double usb plug ins which i use both but my mates external which is different from mine doesn't work.

I have recently built this p but haven't reinstalled windows sine fitting my old hard drive, could his be a problem?

If it's front USB then try using the rear ones as they tend to power devices better, it's unlikely to be your Windows install unless it was very, very messed up.

Simple solution tends to be the best to stick with - try alternative ports, check cable, check BIOS, try another USB device in the ports etc.

Chances are it's internal or external cabling.
