I have an Mp3 player that can be plugged into the usb port on the pc to transfer music files.It has worked with no problems for months now but today when plugged into the pc i get the following message..

Is there anything i can do to get this working again even if the mp3 player has to be formatted somehow?

Have you tried it in another USB port? Have you tried it in another computer altogether?

If it works in another port - the other port is nerfed. If it work in another computer - Windows is being gay.

If it doesn't work in another port/computer - USB stick is probably corrupt.

Not sure if you can "fix" it if the PC says it cant use it.

I've had this before, can't remember what I done to fix it though. I think I went to the device manager and uninstalled the memory stick or usb drivers and installed them again.

Sorry i forgot to mention..

I have tried it in another port and another pc and it was the same.Any more suggestions welcome.. :confused:

have u been playing with the front case usb connector inside the case where it connects to the mobo?

alternatively have you opened ** pc recently and been playing around inside the case with something else?

if the answer is no to both question....uninstall the usb drivers found in control panel, system, device manager...then reboot and install them and then reboot again...

with my vaio pocket mp3 player, i found after i format it and windows picks it up again. Might just be windows having a spaz, but most advice given should help :)

That message can be caused by one of the data pins on the device becoming disconnected or broken. On a USB port, the pins go +5v, Data Tx, Data Rx, Ground. If one of the data pins becomes disconnected then the computer will detect that the USB device is connected but not be able to identify it. Other than that, it could be the USB controller IC on the device.

If the USB plug is attached to the device (like it is a USB pen drive) then over time there is a chance that the USB connector could have become loose from the PCB and one of the tracks could have broken.

@xirokx
The answer is no the case hasn't been opened.As i stated in the earlier post that it is the same on another pc so it is not a pc problem.

@Psypher5
How can i format it if windows doesn't pick it up?Is there a way?

@RobH
It is only 4 months old and hasn't been used much so it looks like an rma if it is definately broke,unless i can format it somehow maybe in dos or something.Suggestions please?

Do try and uninstall the USB drivers and re-nstalling this can be a problem....

Also is it a USB 2.0 device (if so (i know this may sound stupid) but make sure you have SP2 installed as i remember something about USB devices fix on SP2)

EDIT: I had this problem also on my Sony NWA-3000, it happened because my PSU, didnt have enough power to power the device and therefore it wouldn't recognise it....just a thought....good luck dude

I get that message with one of my front USB ports when I try & connect anything else apart from my Siatek gamepad :(

Tried any other USB device like a printer to see if working?

Also, USB ports can get a nice layer of dirt on them making the gold connectors black-ish. So, try cleaning them maybe with some small-amount of IPA (both on the PC end and MP3) :D

Well i actually found that it had options on the player to format and low format.I tried both and it is still the same so is it faulty?
