What sort of transfer speeds should I be getting transferring files from my Samsung F3 to a usb pendrive as at the moment I'm getting a pityful 1.47MB/sec?

Depends on the types of file. Transferring 500 1mb pictures will give you such speeds, but transferring 1gb videos should see a higher throughput. I think I got around 25mb/s transferring some videos to an external drive the other day.

It was just a few albums so individually the files would be fairly small, you reckon that's about right then? I was just thinking that maybe I had something setup incorrectly somewhere.

Nah, small files are generally quite slow. if you check benchmarks you'll notice that small file transfers are significantly slower!

Still 1.47MB/sec is eerily close to the maximum throughput of a USB1.1 device. I wonder if this USB stick is being downgraded to USB 1.1 speeds for some reason.

I get 6MB/s transfer to my USB pen drive, because it's useless. But most are slow unless you specifically get a speedy one.
