A friend in work has a USB stick
All his daughters UNI work is on it, he thinks she has just pulled the stick out of the laptop and now the stick will not show any of the data, it will show up on the USB on the tv though
What's the best way to fix this so the files are accessible via the laptop again ?

Cheers

If you try it in another machine and the problem persists, then you could try using the Microsoft DaRT Tools. It has a built in data recovery tool that you can run from a boot disk outside the operating system.

I have had a lot of success using this tool to recover data from corrupt memory sticks in the past.

With the USB plugged in, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, on the left, Disk Management.

Leave it a couple a minute, does the USB stick show up?

If it does, if you go into properties does it tell you the device status & provide a troubleshoot button.
