USB sticks 'will transform charts'

I think there is a definate possibility for this to happen, so long as the price is right and theres not too much DRM protection.

However what purpose does this serve over downloading MP3's?

I just went and grabbed two of these for me and my GF. She's a massive fan of the fratelli's and this is just so clever imo.

it appears initially to be a 256 meg key with a track (MP3) some FLV video, and a load of bootloader SWF stuff for a menu and a couple web redirects (one of which doesn't appear to work :P)

frankly if they released albums in this medium and found a decent way of protecting them (from deletion more than copying) I'd probably buy music this way.

The packaging sucks in this instance tho I have to say, a cardboard backing, a lanyard and a micro usb key

because doing it legally normally ends up in the song being coveered in DRM and therefore takes significantly more battery power to play on portable devices etc, whereas CDs are not normally protected (as much) and therefore are easier to Rip and Burn :)

That makes absolutely no sense in the context of the post you quoted .

This is nothing new...Keane did this with their previous two singles: A Bad Dream & Nothing In My Way...they where limited to 2,000 sticks each and available online @ £3.99.

Some fans got ripped off when they where auctioned (sellers bought most of them) and then sold them for £25-£30 each  only diehard fans will buy this as a collector's item

And yes I am mad - I still buy CD singles online if they are by an artist I really really like...DRM free and in control ;)

I have no need for poorer quailty DRM infested tracks...it is the future no doubt about it but I feel that music will become more 'disposable' in the future...as younger people just buy single tracks and forget the whole 'album' concept.

I love CD albums...but my teenage cousin for example just downloads lots of single tracks and doesn't buy 'albums'...changing times perhaps?

Why are people slagging off digital mediums here? what the hell do you think a cd is ffs! anyway, if they had not kept the music as mp3 but as actually a full wav or better file format which would have been easily possible, this would have been a great idea.

but as they are flogging off mp3s it will not do well as the quality just isnt there.

As said before, just a publicity stunt.

The flow of digital information is losing its tangibility anyway. Pretty soon all forms of digital entertainment will be stored online and on local machines. No need for CDs, DVDs, memory sticks or any other alternative storage device.

Music will be available via online libraries (already happening: iTunes, Audible, Napster etc)
Visual entertainment will soon be all on demand, with movies and documentaries etc being available to watch at the press of a button. (Already started, Virgin Central, 4oD

Physical storage will still probably be used for back-ups, mobility and nostalgia.
