USB - Unknown Device Issue - Win XP

Friend of mines PC seems to have developed a USB problem. No USB devices work, thats printers, mice, memory sticks.

Was working fine until recently. Now besides the normal entries you see in device manager under USB controllers I get 8 Unknown Devices. See screenshot.

So a clean install with XP SP3. Same problem. I've even installed the chipset drivers for the mobo. It's a Winfast 6150K8MD, so basically an Nvidia chipset.

Still no luck, usb external disk and mouse power up but nothing happens.

I'd be grateful for any further ideas

Have tried to update the drivers via device manager?

Yes

Cannot continue the hardware update wizard.

The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you already have installed.

Should give you more information about manufacturer/chipset of what is missing and point you in the right direction for drivers.

Does a USB keyboard work in the BIOS or is a USB stick seen during post?
If not it's a hardware problem, could try clearing the CMOS and seeing if that does anything.

Yes USB k/b and memory stick see at post. I can get into the bios using the del key on it. It lists the usb key as storage at post too.

I've set all the BIOS settings to safe defaults but will try the CMOS option too.

It'll do no harm but I don't think it will help. Play with the USB settings in the BIOS to see if it does any good. Would also try anything you can boot from like W7 disks setup or Ubuntu to see if USB devices work there.

Interesting.....

Since being in the BIOS with the USB keyboard, and only changing one setting - allow USB keyboard, the USB devices are now detected......thats k/b, mouse, USB memory stick.

Worked for a while but now stopped again. Concluded faulty h/w. Will try a 5 port pci USB. Card. Thanks for everyones input

if i may make a suggestion, have you tried removing the power cord, and pressing and holding the power button, this is to drain the power from the system, & rest the usb stack.
i've had a few issues in the past were this has fixed the issue. might be worth a shot.

Thanks. Yes, its been powered off, with no power cord on a few occasions. CMOS disconnected at the same time but no difference.

Pull the hardware screen up, unplug all USB devices. Do the unknown devices disappear?

Update the Bios
Install System & Chipset Drivers

If the above fails on a fresh install of XP, the chances are the USB Controller is shagged. If theres no warrenty it may result in a replacement motherboard.

Cheers, it was working until about 2 months ago.

BIOS is the latest version
I've installed the system and chipset drivers from Foxconn, which then gave me sound and a working wired network connection.

A clean install is what I started with really after initially fiddling about with it.

So I've come to the same conclusion that the controller is shagged and have ordered a 5 USB PCI card to install.

That was the next call if you didn't want another motherboard to be puchased. You might of been able to pick up the exact model for 20 quid if you were lucky enough.
