Hi,

Got asked to fix a pc which was having problems with its usb ports.

its windows xp.

there are 4 usb ports, two front panel and to back panel.

The owners bt home hub would connect to the pc via any usb port fine and so would one usb flash drive.

However his printer, scanner, webcam and other usb flash drives would just pop up in bottom corner, unknown device when connecting, in device manager it would also say unknown device.

So two devices work in all ports, but 3 devices won't work in any.

I turned the usb's off in bios and on again but still the problem remained.

If anyone has some advice that would be great.

Thanks a lot.

sounds silly but could be a software issue? Try doing an XP repair install over the top of itself and see if that works? Or try a linux live boot disk (ubuntu etc) that will soon tell you if tis hardware or software

well the back panel ones are hard wired in, front ones its possible they have come loose, but as i said some devices worked in them.

thing is the devices were working fine, then they said the next time they went to use them they wouldn't work as i described above.

I'll try the linux live boot option, do you have a link by any chance to what you would use in this case?

Remove the USB entries in device manager and reboot, making sure you have chipset drivers downloaded before you do so.

its some piece of poop from tesco with no driver cd, so gonna check the mobo when i get home for make and model.

got ubuntu live downloading aswell now.

so odd that some things work but some don't when the day before they did.
