Just wondering, strange I know, but cans normaly say "Month/Year" E.G I have a tin of rice pudding that says 01/2007, and I was wanting to know, do these things expire the first of the month, or are they still ediable untill the end?

pfft will be fine :)

bear in mind that they will have an inbuilt safety margin and yes it will be the end of the month.

if not claim poor labelling and sue for thousands`

I wouldn't worry about it. We found tins of tinned fish 15 years out of date, opened them up and smelt ok but we didn't eat them.

They're safe to eat months after the use by date, just have a sniff.

Canned food can last up to 50years or more. But care need to be taken as botulinum can be easily caught and could be fatal - Hence why buldge cans are bad for consumption.

Joking right? We're not talking chilled fresh fish.
People are too fussy- milk is out of date, but smells fine and still thrown away.
I keep it till it goes off, I always smell it first, and an example of this, my milk was due to run out of date on *** 21st, but it was lumpy and smelt rancid on the 20th.

I never really concerned myself with the dates on food until the other week I was eating some Mr Kipling cake bar thing. I thought it tasted a bit odd and about 2/3rds of the way through it I realized there was mold growing on the bottom... Since then I've been checking dates. Admittedly I'm not the most observant of people :o

Best before dates... therefore best to have it before the date ;)

As a poor student I don't pay attention to them anyway :p

there is a difference between "best" before and "use by"..

one implies that the quality will degrade after a certain point, the other that you should consume it by a certain date....

just smell it, if it smells off then throw it, regardless of the dates.... which is exactly why we evolved our sense of smell....

oh yea, about botolinium.... puffy cans dont touch.... botolinium is only produced in anaerobic conditions, which is perfect for canned stuff.... so if canned stuff smells funny, throw it away... since botolinium is a neurotoxin, if you eat stuff with it, your lips and toungue will tingle and probably go numb... eat enough of it you stop breathing.... so it's not a good idea....
