Use by dates

Are school system needs changing.

I could comment on the irony of this post, but it's probably just a typo knowing you!

To the OP, you need to learn the difference between use by and best before dates.
Potatoes will have a best before date, not a use by date.
If you keep them in a dark place they'll usually be all right for ages after the best before.

Like others have said just use your senses to tell you if food's gone off. It's what people have done for thousands of years and we haven't all died out.

I cooked the chicken and it was still a bit pink after over cooking and the texture was a bit weird. So I threw most of it away.

Chicken can still be pink after cooking, that is not a good sign of anything.

If its got a translucent look, then it's still raw.

I either just suck or a good example of why school system need changing. Decades of extra tuition and I'm still rubbish at English. But I can tell you which are/our I should be using. It just doesn't fathom into my thoughts when typing, I surmise it's because I think in sounds and type that (if that makes sense)

I don't mean to sound crude, but you can tell if raw chicken is OK by the smell.

If it's gone, it smells like eggy farts. If it has no smell, it's OK.

Use by = I stick to them, I'd eat sausages or mince a day or so out, providing they're not green.

With milk, I chuck it if it's even two days before the use by date, I have a really bad gag reflex when it comes to milk.

Cheese = cut the fur off and carry on :D

Best before date = anyone's game

This thread comes up all the time in here. If it smells/looks OK then it's good to go. Even if it's a bit funny, just make sure it's well cooked and you should be OK. I often cook things well past their use by date, always keep things out of the fridge and undercook quite a lot of my meat and I've never had food poisoning.

Like bledd. however, I can't stand milk that has been in my fridge for a few days. It's fine in coffee, but I can't drink a glass of milk if I've had it for 3 or more days.

I wouldnt eat anything past the "Use by", just not worth the risk unless I froze it. "Best before" is fair game. Sometimes it tastes a bit naff a few days later but it has yet to make me ill.

On a side note, anyone seen they are getting VERY precise with use by dates? My cheese spread had "Use By: 07 Nov 2012 11:15". :D
