"Return of the Jedi" was originally to be titled "Revenge of the Jedi", but someone at Lucasfilm felt the word "Revenge" was unbecoming of someone as noble as a Jedi so it was changed to "Return" at the last minute.Zefan said:

I'd have to look up when...sometime in the 10th century, probably...947-8 and 952-4. Rulership was a bit volatile in those days
