Before I begin, just a message to the moderators to emphasise this threads only purpose is to request recommendations for the best server subscription service, nothing more, especially relating to any questionable use of said servers. If posters can please ensure they respond appropriately also. Otherwise, I understand if this thread is locked or deleted if its deemed undesirable for the forum.

My current Astraweb service has ended and am pondering whether to resubscribe or try another, either on the basis of a speedier service or just to reduce cost.

Any recommendations? I'm a Virgin Media 152MB customer.

Why don't you use the free VM servers (Highwinds)? Then you just need a block server (such as Astraweb) for fills. This is a very cheap option as instead of a subscription, you just use up your block gradually (maybe over years) when something falls off the retention of the VM servers.

Depends how much you use I there are often really good offers on if you look around I currently pay £12 every 4 months on newdemon for unlimited.
Also depends how fast your internet is and wether you care if it is maxed out?
usenetbucket is EU based and has a 3 euro p/m package which is unlimited if your happy with 10mbs.

I used to use NewsGroupDirect, had a yearly account for $55, though got rid it as most of the stuff I grab these days is 0day stuff, just use the VM usenet, together with a block account.

Good suggestions guys.

Interested in the free Virgin Media option, can live with 30 day retention. What details do I use for Virgin's servers with Sabznd?

this is what i do as well i've hardly ever had to touch my block acc got it from news deamon and i've had it for 2 years now i think it cost me around £8 for a 50GB Non-Expiring Block Plan

Is that a one off fee? I have just bought 50GB non expiring plan for £6.20 with them, doesn't say anything about recurring charges?

Generally when the 50GB is used up you will fail to connect to the server and some companies when your on the last ~10GB will email you to let you know about their new awesome deals. If you ignore the emails ext then your account will just expire when the 50GB is used.

Cheers :)

What's a general max speed that people can realistically achieve?

I'm on the 152Mb Virgin media package, connected to port 119 and the Europe server, i get no more than 17Mbs, not much faster than when using uTorrent, with that i average around 14Mbs.

Switch to port 443 and tick the use SSL box (will help prevent VM's traffic shaping)

Also try increasing the number of connections to the server (think of them as download threads) your user area should tell you the max amount you can use.

I max out my 80mbit connection easily and people go up further than that into the 300-500 range.

The package i'm on allows 50 connections which i'm using, just tried to tick the SSL box and it says my package doesn't allow for SSL encryption.

Have changed the port to 443 so will give it a go and see what i get, cheers for the speedy reply! :)

In that case i would try disabling the server in your client for a minute and going and registering for a free usenetbucket account (if you register with facebook you get 20GB free for 7 days) and do the same thing use the 50 connections but also use SSL, usenetbucket allows it on their test account and just compare your speed between the two. It should let you know if its a problem with your current provider or if its something with your connection.

Also a general rule about the connections once you have it maxing your connection speed you should reduce them until you are using the minimum amount needed to max it + maybe 1 or 2 extra. This is because they increase overheads and its generally a waste.
