Users Poke Fun at Microsoft's First Windows 8.1 Ad Showing the Start Button

It didn't happen in Win8 either if you either told the installer not to create a start menu entry, or unpinned as you went along.

I've got the same tiles now (bar the few that changed between 8 and 8.1) that I had before upgrading to 8.1

from what I can see u only said about the DOS/command prompt which applys to my post.

Does it not? It's a small gripe I have, good to see it will be sorted.

So funny to see people who think technology should stay the same and are confused by something as simple as a start screen which is arguably simpler and easier to use than the nested layers of the start menu.

Nested layers?

yes that's the post I've seen which only really applys to part of my post.

I still can't see the issue, if a person buys a laptop or desktop which comes with win8 pro and/or if u bought win8 pro separately and u find u don't really don't like it, nobody is forcing the person to use it. if the person prefer win7 then simply downgrade to win7 pro which is free.

also if the person likes some features of win8 but not the new UI, still your not forced into using the new UI, if you don't like the new UI then simply change it using either built-in options i.e colours/background or 3rd party programs to change the whole UI. I could understand if there was no way of changing the UI either by built-in options or 3rd programs then yes you can say your being forced.

Also I wonder if some people actually bother to learn a new OS,for example in Win8.1 you can make it boot straight to old desktop UI,also very easy to customise and make shortcuts on taskbar and old desktop UI or add/ remove Metro tiles etc....

I really do feel some people make a mountain out of a very small mole hill, fact is Windows has been easy to use for a long time, productivity wise I don't find it any slower(I do have both Metro and old desktop organised to my needs).

It's only an "issue" in the same way the Start Screen/Modern UI is to the whingers that refuse to move on.

I think that was kind of the point. Either are only "issues" if the end user lets them be, as both are addressable by customizing your own Windows environment.

To be honest, it looks like many of my old gripes with the Start Screen have been improved on (or ironed out) by 8.1. However I still would like an option built into Windows to choose between the UIs.

It also seems most people on here's reasons for not liking the old Start Menu make as little sense as they make out our reasons for not liking the Start Screen do.

If MS had left an option for us to choose in Windows, it would have been fine, but they didn't. Having Third Party Apps are not the same as most users will not know to look for them.

I'm afraid it's called moving on. Windows 8/8.1 really isn't as bad as anyone complaining about it makes it out to be, and it takes a matter of days to get used to it.

This thread is starting to go round in circles now, and it's getting tedious. So, much like windows 8/8.1, let's move on!

Yeah, I'm done. Made my point, often enough. Will probably load Windows 8.1 onto my home machine next format, if I think the changes have improved things enough (on my laptop).

can I just say if people don't like the lack of a proper start button THERES ALWAYS WINDOWS 7 rant over =)

And round we go again...

Why can't some people understand that lots of us just do not want a full screen touch screen oriented start menu with horrible tiles everywhere?

I will continue to use and recommend StartIsBack to everybody on W8/8.1
Problem solved. Now we can move on.

Seriously, somebody wrote an article based on YOUTUBE comments? That is utterly ridiculous.
I was thinking the same. Even worse is that a thread has been created about it.

I tend to think if you're so thick you can't find a start menu by pressing the windows button that's been on pretty much every keyboard for 15 years, or just remember it's still in the bottom left corner without a little sign to remind you you probably shouldn't be using anything more advanced than an etch-a-sketch (although that's one of those damn new fangled tablet thingies as well so can't use that either) :D

Lol!

I like windows 8 but my one gripe is that metro gets cluttered far too fast, this isn't really W8's fault as it's legacy software installing tons of "start menu" shortcuts which causes the problem, but they should have realised this when developing it.

How is that any different than allowing your house to get cluttered. You either deal with and organise it, maintain it or allow it to become one big giant cluster.... then bitch because you're so disorganised.

Every PC or laptop we sell and build for our customers has the option for Start8 to be installed. Every single one has been sold with Start8 installed, by request, from our customers.

I have to wonder how many backhanders Stardock are dishing out to decision makers in MS, they are making a fortune.

I think pressing two keys at once would be a bit too complex.

Or just right click in the hot corner its no different than using a legacy start menu. And its quicker for all system management stuff.

For everything else I just hit win key and type the first few letters of the program I need, if its not on desktop or pinned to task bar. Who needs a start menu. I'm glad windows changed i don't need a start button.

You can customise the new Start menu to do everything the old Start menu did.
By the end of the day I had it doing everything I wanted it to do.
I tried Win8 for the first time last Monday, and like, it's nowhere near as bad as people had been making it out to be.

This tells me all Microsoft needed to do was add the right buttons (such as My Computer, Control Panel, the Shutdown/Restart Buttons etc) rather than hiding them away. And, as other have said, make the Search function better (Win7's was perfect).
