Hi
moved into my own place and had my quarterly bill.
it appears after given them meter readings, i am using around 1000kwh of electric a month.
ok ill give as much info as possible:
* its a2 bedroom flat which is all electric (no gas)
* it has immersion heater (timer set to come on at 2am for 2 hours) and 4 storage heaters with only 2 of them being on (lounge and hall)
* in kitchen i have a brand new A Rated fridge Freezer, an old electric oven & hob and a brand new washer - also a kettle, microwave
* i work 8.30am till 6pm
* i have 2 lamps on in lounge with both with energy saving bulbs in
* i have a new sony TV and watch dvds and play my xbox one for a couple of hours every other say.

i did a check last night and between 7pm yesterday and 7pm today i have used 26kwh, im judging that the immersion heater used 6 of that because it is a 3kwh heater and is on for 2 hours (too much?)
i played Rise of the Tomb raider for 3 hours last night but apart from that and having tv, i cannot see how i am using so much electricity.

my bill for the quarter is £340, which is going to cripple me to pay because my direct debit is for £40 a month, so i have to find £220 for this quarter.

what can be using so much electric and how can i check?

Are you sure your emiorsen heater is only set to come on for 2 hours. There's usually a over ride switch, make sure that isn't on.

Same with the radiators.

well according to the timer on the immersion heater it only comes on between 2am-4am. the boost is also set to off
and the storage heaters the light only comes on after 11pm.

I can't see what else you've listed that would use that much other than those two things. As that's a crazy amount.

Any way you can test the immersion heater like turn it off off, and check to see if meter slows down or stays the same.

Oh yeah you didn't specify how much those heaters are on, are they just on 24/7? In which case that would do it.

Better idea to keep an eye on the matter and see how fast it's spinning at different times if the day. Or go on amazon and get an energy metre.

Buy some thick jumpers and limit the use of heating. Do you really need it on every day? How quickly after you get out of bed have you left for work?

God knows what your bill might be if it actually gets cold in the next few weeks.

the heating is storage heaters, they are supposed to power on at night then slowly disperse the heat during the day using no electricity, so i do not have it on all the time etc

the only thing i electric items i have on, when i get home is my TV and maybe the fire tv or bluray player and the couple of lamps.
i may boil the kettle a couple of times for a cup of tea and will have oven on for maybe 30mins tops to cook my tea but that is it.

so unless my fridge is not operating at the specified rating, im at a loss to see what it can be

Stop using the radiators at all same with immersion heater. Boil kettle to wash pots and use electric shower no baths. I pay 30 a month in a 1 bed flat with economy 7.

Sounds like your new home is all set up for economy 7 useage, but you'e signed up for electric at the flat 24/7 rate?

i have to submit 2 readings, one is rate 1 and the other is rate 4.
but with first utility i have to submit rate 1 and rate 2, so am i right in assuming rate 4 would be rate 2?
but i think i have since learned (googling it) that i have been submitting the wrong readings
on first utility they say:
Register # Night (01) *
Register # Day (02) *

but i think i have been reading on internet, night rate is Rate 2 or 4 on meter on a meter and Rate 1 is day

which if correct, means i am in fact using 180/200 KwH during the day and the 800KwH or so is in the night..

so it looks like i have submitted incorrect readings, but means my immersion heater is using like 25KwH per night

flip side of that is, my bill will need adjusting but for some reason my night rate for electricity is more?

its the storage heaters at night i have 4 storage heaters and when all on at night charging my electric bill goes up 15 quid a week so now we have them off and just use an oil radiator if it gets cold as we out most of day .

beleive it or not i might sound like an old sod but we bought electric blankets for at night so have no need for the storage heaters to be on.

our immersion is now only turned on for a bath as we have an electric shower and just boil the kettle for washing pots.

ive also taken over the washing machine (im sure the wife did it on purpose lol) but i now set the timer on the washer to come on when its cheap rate at night you would not believe how much you can save.

my leccy is still not cheap though lol spend maybe 25-35 in winter and 20 in the summer this is due to extra heating with radiator and stuff as i live on the seafront and when it gets cold it gets baltic lol

the kids whacking their xboxs on and my xbox and 3 tv running dont help lol

Are you sure it is your own usage? if you have just moved in they might have something confused or trying to bill you for previous resident's outstanding. (Though if you clocked your own use at nearly 30 a day then it probably is something else).

I have a 4 bedroom house, am in it often, don't really turn things off, but I only used 3000 all of last year, 2100 the year before. Something's wrong there. I have

TV, AMP, Virgin box, fish tank, NAS/Server, another TV, fridge always on other than tv which switches off power completely when turned off. PC is sometiems on a lot, whether I am using it or not. Then electric garage door, used twice daily at least to get car in and out or lazy way into the house. Electric oven, dishwasher, dryer, washing machine... You get the picture. So that said, there must be some confusion, did you take a meter reading when you moved in?

Looking at it i have confused my meter readings, well at least got them the wrong way round.
So in fact i am using 20kwh at night and about 5/6kwh during peak time
So the immersion heater and the 2 storage heaters are consuming 20kwh at night

Well if the storage heaters are on for seven hours each charging, then yes you could easily be totally 25 units a night, as the imeraion heater for two hours will burn 6 if it is a three kw device.
How long are your rads on for, and what rating are they?
Does your hot tank really need two hours of immersion to heat?
Have you an electric shower?
If so why have the immersion timed at all? How many dishes do you wash each day in a two bed flat?
