Hey guys,
I once remember a thread on these forums where someone had used 2.5 inch drives and rigged them up with elastic bands so that the drive noise could be elinated almost completely.

Anyone knwo where that thread is please?

Cheers, Steve

years ago i used to build RC model tugboats, i used to run massive engines, these were damned noisy especially inside a sealed fiberglass hull.

the only thing that i know off to totally kill noise/ vibration is.......clear bathroom Silicone sealent.......you dont bolt the engine inside the hull...you lay it on a 1'' thick bed of sealent, the sealent also acts like a very powerful glue and it goes quite stiff when it dry.

you can mold it while wet too.......leave it for 10 mins and spit on your fingers............for sata drives etc....just put a blob on each corner and lay it on an aluminium base plate.............dont push it down, just lay it..............the sealent will support the weight easily, it wont squidge out too much...........i'm going to use this method too

i used this sealant for tug towing...it supported a 4 pound re-wound car starter motor...i had two of them in a 46'' long 80 lb model...this model could tow a 40ft yacht easily.

Isn't it called Bungee Modding?

rubber bands would need carefully setting up/look a bit scruffy, but you cant see the sealant if you put it far enough under the SATA ...totally transparent..plus you can mold it while curing into a very smooth fillet ( for joints), with spit on your finger tip.

the trouble with sealant is, you'll need to cut through it with a surgical blade to remove the SATA, you cant rip it free, it's way too strong....

you'll need to practice with it first...you need to left the surface film semi-cure before it'll mould...............you could use sealant to mount the fans/PSU to the case as well! but you'd need to be pretty skilled first before attempting this :D...... would it kill vibrations?........TOTALLY.

but 60% of fan noise is caused by fan guards anyway...the air rushing past them.....

so unless you're going to get really Geeky over this...it might not be worth bothering with..............but the SATA, yes definitely!

most of my pc noise seems to coming from the GPU fan anyway..i cant even hear the PSU

because if you run your pc with no case side, yes it runs very cool indeed, but by God it's noisy :D..i can hear my pc from upstairs!

Huh? You dont see black bungee cord (shock cord) unless everything is made from transparent acrylic. Plus, do it right and it will be much neater than even the wiring.
I Bungee modded my raptors and it cut down the resonance so you cant hear it. I wouldnt use leastic bands as they degrade, bungee does too, but has a fabric outer and is multi stranded so lasts a far longer time.

Really wouldnt bother with sealant. Goodbye warranty, more likely to resonate the case than the bungee, and messy.

oh i see!...............as for the sealant, just you wait till i upload my photos, it'll look fine.....no mess at all :p

I didnt mean it wouls look messy, its just every time I use it I invariably get it on my hands / glue myself together / glue myself to whatever it is im sealing and cover the sink trying to wash it off.

yes :D.........but the trick is not to touch it, till it's semi cured on the outside

you put a stack of 2 coins in the middle of your chosen surface to adhere to, put a dab of sealent on the 4 corners underneath your SATA and place it centrally over the coins, this will dry overnight and the coins will fall out, leaving the SATA at a level height of about 5 mm above the surface..as if floating there, it'll definitely look ok...as long as you put the sealant about 1'' inside each corner; you'll not see it.

you can raise the stack of coins to 4 or more, to aid cooling underneath, but somewhere close by you'll still need a small fan.

it's only an idea, but i'm using the sealant to attach twin fans to a frame...for the front intake.....this will be tricky.....because it must look neat and tidy

I often use silcone sealant to mount fans instead of screwing them into the case. It's absolutely great at dampening vibration noise... and it peels off easily while still holding like glue. Great stuff.

2.5" 7200 RPM WD scorpio drive here. I can't hear it at all yet notice no drop in performance compared to my samsung spinpoint.

They're a bit more expensive then a 3.5" drive but still far cheaper than going for solid state.

Well, my PC is almost silent now after a lot of research and tweaking. My single hard drive, a Samsung 320 single platter is held in place by some sewing elastic, suspended in the hard drive rack. I recommend Samsung highly.

Can't you get real kits that you just put heatsinks on the edges of the hard drive, then wrap it in some special foam stuff and put it in a 5.25" drive bay (for 3.5" drives) that makes them pretty much inaudible?

You can get a........... http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-006-BT&tool=3

and various other things that'll do the job, the trouble is that caddy will spoil the front panel.........it's bad enough having a blu/ray in the front, let alone that ugly thing below:cool:

i'll have to give this loads of thought
