Using 20-pin ATX PSU on new board with 24-pin socket

Hi all,

I'm looking to get a new, cheap, basic C2D setup (probably using something like the GA-73PVM-S2) for my CarPC setup to replace an ageing Athlon XP setup!

However, my power supply unit is only a 20-pin ATX jobbie - will this work on the newer boards with a 24-pin power connector? There isn't any CarPC specific power supplies with a 24-pin connector as far as I'm aware (and my PSU works, so don't really want to be changing it if I can help it!)

Cheers!

The 24pins and 8pin(Aux) are really needed for Powerful CPU's like OC's Duals and Quads and if you run 2x GPU's.

You can get away with 20pins and 4pins depending on current needed.

It's only going to be running something like an E2180 at stock speeds, and the CPU won't be getting hammered too much! No PCI-E graphics cards etc, just as low-power as I can get it!

You should be ok. I got a E2180 to 3.6Ghz on a Gigabyte P31 DS3L (24 pin atx socket) using a psu with a 20 pin main and 4 pin auxilary.
