Using a controller on GTA3/Vice City?

Got GTA3 and Vice City recently and I've been trying to figure out how to play them properly on either of my 2 controllers (an Xbox360 controller and a Playstation 2 pad plugged in to a USB adapter). It's been pretty futile so far as what Microsoft don't tell you about the 360 pad is that it's about as useful as a slice of bread in a sock for the PC and the PS2/USB adapter would be fine if it wasn't for the down right crazy right analogue stick where up goes down and right goes left. Neither game recognise the triggers or right analogue stick on the 360 pad, is there any way that can be sorted so the games recognise the triggers and stick as well as having full analogue control with them?

Or am I kind of stuck with having to use the keyboard?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated

Simple. Invert X and Y axis in the controller settings. i use a Saitek P880 myself and it works fine in all games ive tried it on

For gta i would take a mouse and keyboard any day over a controller.

I never knew you could do that, that has driven me mad for the last couple of years!
