Using a dedicated server as a private VPN?

Most decent NASes have a VPN server built in ... my QNAP ones do at least. Works great for connecting in remotely and I don't have to have a separate server running.

Depends what OP actually wants.

- VPN into home network?
- VPN into remote server for "private" browsing.

If it's home network then a router with VPN capabilities, i.e. ASUS N66U is a good idea.
If it's remote server then kimsufi.

Being an Kimsufi/OVH/SoYouStart customer for the past 24 months :p

As well as previous experience of contacting the major databases directly (ipligence, ip2location, maxmind, neustar) to have them change the location of the IP address(es).

With OVH/SoYouStart, when you order additional IP addresses you can select the "country of origin" for the IPs too, not sure if that's there for Kimsufi as I've never needed them, but you can contact CS for an IP change (probably also take a month to reply!).

Why get a dedicated server for just a VPN. Surely a VPS is enough?

I just set my own OpenVPN up on a £15 a year VPS. Works very well with a few tweaks. You can also go with a company such a Torguard which is also pretty inexpensive. I just signed up for something like £15 every 6 months and that includes a dedicated and shared IP.

It all depends on how security conscious you are and whether or not you have other plans for a server than just a VPN.

unfortunately my home internet is not stable enough to use as a VPN :( So a VPS seems like a good idea, which one do you use?

I'd really like to have access to my NAS but as mentioned it doesnt really work. And putting TBs of data on a dedicated server running Owncloud is very expensive.

There are quite a few choices to be honest but it's very dependent on location. The one that I use is called Crissic Solutions and one of their datacentres is based in Jacksonville, America. The connection is actually pretty good.

As I'm unsure on exactly your requirements the best thing to do is google 'Low End Box' and that website compares a lot of the cheapest options that exist, including their locations.

Hope that helps!
