using a different local port to ssh to remote 22

Hi, in my office at work i dont have port 22 available to ssh into my server on port 22. However I do have open ports 5800/5900 open work. Can I still use these ports to ssh into my remote machine on port 22 ?

ie local port 5800 mapped to remote port 22 , for ssh use.

Yes depending on the firewall and the level of access on the box. You can map external ports to dissimilar internal port numbers.

Great. I have root ssh access to the remote server. The remote firewall is a Linksys WRT54GL, I'm not sure I understand what I have to configure

map the external port 5800 to internal 22, simple, on your router at home of course.

well I tried to 'map' the external port 5800 to the internal port 22 but it wont work.

in the Linksys WRT54GL I can port forward easily, but I assume I'm supposed to use the port triggered range page and I set the parameters but it doesnt work...

ie.

Triggered Range: start port 5800 end port 5800

Forwaded Range: start port 22 end port 22

and enabled chcked..

any1 else fot of these linksys routeres and can succesfully map dissamilar external to internal ports ?

Well when i said firewall i refer to devices such as Cisco Pix's, Watchguard Fireboxes and Nokia Checkpoint soltuions.

The WRT54GL is not what i would call a firewall as it isnt a dedicated hardware applicance.

You should still be able to forward different port numbers though, are you using TCP or UDP as the protocol medium?

SSH is a UDP protocol.
