Using a laptop powered in car?

Oh yeah I have the AA number saved as my battery keeps going flat as I run an inverter when the engine isn't running, what's with all the little digs on here? 'Steorn' 'Noble prize' Is it to make somebody feel little?? Suppose first hand experience takes a back seat to some googling and watching YouTube videos.

I use an inverter and have for years. Again keeping battery tools charged, the same again with a laptop. This is used when the engine is running usually driving. Stop unplug the Inverter and my equipment is charged?

Not rocket science is it.

It was at the idea that because you're pulling it from a cigarette lighter socket - the energy is somehow free. It's not. You're generating it from whatever fuels your car. Perhaps you don't notice the negligible amount compared to the amount used to propel the vehicle - but it's not free.

No doubt you could do this using an inverter and I'm sure it's a perfectly decent solution in your case. Although why would OP need to buy an inverter when you can get a smaller, more efficient and less expensive laptop car charger?

Right. Perhaps my wording of free maybe a little loose and I'll stick to my use case. I do not notice any difference in fuel, power, load or anything for that matter when I use my inverter. I must stress this is used whilst driving to charge my equipment, laptop and occasionally power tool batteries. I do not sit there with the engine off whilst the inverter is running, this gets switched off and unplugged this again then gets plugged back in when the engine is back on.

Anyway OP crack on with DC-DC boost and soldering, using USB C adapters that may not work.
