I have an audiophile 2496. I also have a microphone i'd like to use. It uses a mini jack. The two in's on my sound card are L and R and both big jack holes. So i use an adaptor on the microphone plug it into one of the ins. But my sound card won't pick it up at all, no program will pick it up and i can't communicate with my microphone. Found no help on google, so wondering if someone on here can help at all. Cheers

It sounds as if you might need a preamp.

If it's just for gaming/chat, then a USB headset/mic may be cheaper than a cheap mic preamp.

I've been looking at the m-audio cards as part of an upgrade from my old audigy and the microphone problem has cropped up here too.

Codmate mentioned getting a pre-amp.. now i'm just thinking, is there a huge difference between pc mic's and professional mic + pre-amp when using them on a pc? The only thing i'd be using the mic for really is ventrilo/gtalk so this may be a little over the top. :P
My Dad plays in a band so I should be able to get hold of a pretty decent mic without any trouble, and the ol bay should yield some results for a nice pre-amp.

To be fair I dont think the card is aimed at gamers, more for musicians, who would presumably have preamps and such. A mic input would be nice but then it would detract from what it really is. A true audio card. Just buy a cheap soundblaster for £10 and run 2 cards?

Yes - the Audiophile 2496 is focussed on stereo reproduction of sound and providing a recording interface.

Most recording devices in the audio world take line-level input, and since the 2496 sees itself as an audio device first and a PC device second, this is the standard it adheres to.

Nasty pre-amps of the sort found in cheap mixing desks are available in kit form for around eight quid, and as the above poster says, you can always run two cards.

Personally I'd go the USB headset route - although I have used my Delta66 for teamspeak etc in the past. I did it with a pre and an SM58 though - haha!

I have a soundblaster live! 24 bit card spare, but wouldn't running two sound cards cause a hell of a lot of conflicts audio/driver wise? I may go for the USB headset option, although the sennheisers ive heard good things about are a good £40. As much of a musician as i am, i don't own any pre-amps and i recently got rid of my sm57 so that option won't be for me. Cheers for the help guys.
