What pins do i connect to each other in the 24 pin connector to use the molex power, without having the PSU connected up to a motherboard?

Thanks

I can't find any information about AT PSUs suitability for this, I'd guess it probably works but it is a very long time since I've seen an AT PSU and I'm not certain so I'd wait for confirmation on this.

Incidentally if you search for "AT PSU" to try and narrow down the results you find out a lot about Penn State University and their "jump start" programme which really doesn't help. :)

AT PSUs never supported power-on via the motherboard connector, they relied on seperate switches that connected the PSU straight to the case's power button.

I remember with ATX power supplies, it's the green wire to either black (ground) wire.

Lol that made me laugh :D

got 2 with switches so just gave it ago with a 4 pin fan.fan on psu and plugged in fan spin for a sec then stops :(
not a green wire in sight
on one block-orange,red,yellow,blue,black,black
on the other block-black,black,white,red,red,red
the above are the 2 mobo conections
any ideas please as i don`t want to fry my self :D
edit:found this http://pinouts.ru/Power/MotherboardPower_pinout.shtml
but which do i short together? as i can`t see anything corresponding to the green

Wow, haven't seen one of those in a while.

From that pinout, it doesn't look like it has a power on button using that method, so the shorting method won't work IMO.

Are there any other cables/connectors or anything coming out the PSU which aren't for powering anything, as one of those might be able to be shorted to turn the PSU on?

Hi it`s been a while but if memory serves just a fan connected is not enough to keep PSU runing on old style AT psu try attaching a old hard drive as well as fan see if that works.

As I said has been some time but if you turn the switch on the psu is live no pins to short out as in ATX psu hope this helps.

yeah there is a switch attached, think it is 240v through it  ,so am being carefull and using a plastic brush to switch it on :D
will have a go with a hdd or maybe a cdrom?,got old cdroms i dont mind burning out,but no spare hdd`s

as it happens i found a spare ATX psu so i used that to check out the noise of the fans i wanted to test.
was going to make a box/enclosure(for future continued use) to use the AT psu if i could get it to work as i :D can`t see me ising it on any future upgrades lol

As I say, AT PSU's have their own switch which is mounted onto the case button.

I've touched the spades of a power button before...not nice.

just been out in da shed playing again :)
you was right 00NukE
needed more draw on the psu, iconnected an old cdrom and away it went :D
new project for the warmer weather ...make a box to put it in at least the psu switch :p
