I’m thinking of using a U1 or U2 server case for one of my home pc’s, apart from being able to fit all the bits in and ensuring ample cooling would there be any drawbacks?

Servercases are specifically designed to fit vendor specific parts e.g. PSU's and fans. We use Dell and HP servers here and looking inside them none of the parts off the mobo are stuff you can get from places like OCUK.
There are some 1U case manufacturers which make cases for mini-atx boards but cant remember the name right now.
