Using a TV as a monitor?

I tried to use my samsung 32b551 as a monitor for a time, for gaming it was amazing but I must say the real drawback was just standard web browsing and the desktop. Text didn't look as sharp as a true monitor. Its down to the size of the pixels. the samsung I used was bigger but it was also 1080P. for me it was definitely no good for every day use.

Well it's a 26" TV but with a resolution of only 1366x768. So things are gonna look BIG!

For comparison, I'm sitting in front of a 24" monitor that has a resolution of 1920x1200.

Could someone please explain to me what is "wrong" with using a TV a s a monitor

e.g if I was to buy this TV for example:

it is clearly a good tv, but what would it be lacking when used as a monitor?

Its resolution is 1366x768 - what would this actually mean for the user instead of 1080p?

Wouldn't you be better off getting this...

...and spend what you save on a tuner card?

Getting the best of both worlds then. And a bigger screen and better rez to boot.

Just remember that if you decide to get a monitor and link a tuner/freeview box to it then it still won't give you as good a picture as a proper TV when watching TV programmes.

Monitors don't have all of that clever onboard picture processing circuitry that you get with a TV.

Before >20" monitors were afforable I used a 26" HDTV as both TV and PC monitor and while it was good for games that resolution just doesn't cut it for web and general usage nowadays. As said, the pixels will appear massive if you're up close but if you're mostly just gaming and movie watching you should be alright.
